A trip to Night Fishing

Night fishing is one of the most popular fun event among Maldivian youths now a days. It really is interactive and great way to make a get together with friends.When looking back into the tradition of Night Fishing, in olden days, people used it as catching some reef fishes for meal. For our fathers and grandfathers, the Night Fishing was not a fun even like it is now. But in modern society, it has become a fun trip, even more than catching fish for meals. Seriously, no one considers catching fish for the meal or trade now a days, but it all goes with making a great fun night. In these modern culture of Maldivians,youngsters go night fishing with group of friends, including both boys and girls. Now, night fishing is not just only about fishing and new   additional events have now been added into the trip which  includes Boduberu' ( Maldivian traditional drum music ) and variety of foods and drinks. The Night fishing has now gone commercial and there are even event organizers who offer packages. 

I have been on some of these great night fishing trips, and personally for me, this is one of the greatest and unique fun event or trip someone can ever have. It is interactive, enjoying and just unforgettable. These pictures are taken from 2 Night fishing trips that i have enjoyed.

Trip is organized by the group of friends. Normally it takes in the weekends. It is also very popular among the workers in companies and government offices. There are packages available for different prices depending on the food and trip duration. However some groups organize the trip by themselves too.

Normally in paid packages, all necessary items are included. These include fishing lines, different types of baits , hooks, lights, knifes, etc. Also includes, food and drinks.

Where to go?

In every fishing boat there is experienced captain who knows the fish spots very well. For night fishing being a successful one, it needs good weather, calm sea and moonlight as per fishermen. The captain will take boat to fish spots trying one by one till there are some hungry fishes to catch.

Catching fish

In night fishing, people normally uses fishing lines. Baits used includes, live fishes and non live fishes and artificial baits. Once, a fish is caught on the hook, the fishing line should be tighten and pull fast to take the fish into boat. This may require some kind of skills to make sure fish does not unhook during pulling the line towards boat to get the fish.

The main food is served at dinner. Maldivian local foods are served as dinner. Rice, Garudhiya ( fish soaps ), chili, onions and Fihunumas ( Grilled fish ). Its one of the best time at whole trip.

After fishing and on the way back home, there is Boduberu and Dance at fishing boat. Sometimes it may be there even on the way to fish spots at the beginning of the trip.

Even though night fishing is fun and enjoying event, it takes lots of energy during the catching of fish. Especially when there is a good spot of fish and bigger fishes are caught on the line, it requires enough strength to pull the line. So there may be some time to breath slow and have some rest.
